Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Good book for a beginner Jan 23, 2010 |
| It is a great book for someone who doesn't have any programming experience. It is very thorough. If you have any programming experience this book is going to seem extremely boring. The first half of the book is more of an introduction to programming in general. Overall I think it is a good book but not a must have. | | | | A fine programming book Oct 2, 2009 |
| Savitch does an amazing job in explaining C++ simply. He makes OOP very easy, and fun to learn. | | | | Very Good Book, No Access Code Sep 15, 2009 |
I agree with most of the reviews here, yes, it is a very good C++ book. I gave 4 star because of the access code, not the content of this book.
I learnt C++ very long ago and my text books are way out of date. Recently I have to do some programming, so I bought this book to refresh my C++ syntax, and to use it as a reference. I have to say I really enjoyed it. I like how things are well organized, and how comprehensive this book is. Sometimes the author goes too much in detail explaining very simple concept and common mistakes, but they are marked in different sessions/colors so that advanced readers can easily skip them.
One warning though. The author says there should to be an access code attached to the book, for free access to the source codes and self-test solutions at [...]. It says if you purchased a new book, then a code card should be included. Well, I can not find it. I don't know if I had mistakenly thrown it away with the package, or this site simply did not send it (and later sell it separately?). A mystery there.
It's another $[...] for the 4th edition access code if you decide to buy it separately ([...]). Considering I paid $[...] already for the book, it is a bit over-priced.

| We are very happy with the copy of the Absolute C++ book we ordered from this site. The book would have costed $115 new so we saved alot of money and we lost nothing. The book was in fine condition and came relatively quickly. | | | | Great intro to C++ book Mar 28, 2009 |
I used this book in my equivalent 'Programming 101' course in college. It is an excellent introduction to object-oriented programming in general and C++ programming in particular.
I really like this book because of the excellent code examples and maybe even more for the bad code examples. I don't mean bad as in poor quality, I mean bad as in bad programming practices, or 'Don't program like this!'. These pitfalls to avoid (as they are called in the book) were especially useful to me as I was learning how to write code for the first time. The pitfall sections show several alternative ways to write the same code, or ways to try to code something showing which are best practices, which work but are bad practices, and which don't work at all.
Even though I took my 'Programming 101' class with this book a few years ago, I still keep it as it is an excellent C++ reference. If I've been writing in some other language like Python or Lisp, this book helps me remember all those pesky little syntax details that C++ that everyone hates so much.
Bottom Line: If you need a beginning C++ book, especially if you've never programmed before, or you want a general C++ reference, this is an excellent book for you. | | | Write your own review about Absolute C++ (4th Edition)
