Item Description...
Product Description Uncommon times call for uncommon wisdom. It's inspiring to hear from people who've graduated from the school of hard knocks, yet kept a sense of humor. People like Twain, Voltaire, Oscar Wilde. People who've said the thing so well that we all wish we'd said it. People who've been there, done that, and refuse to sugarcoat what they've learned. People who know, as Sherry Hochman puts it, that "Every day is a gift---even if it sucks."
From Kathryn and Ross petras, curators of craziness (and surprising smarts), comes a timely collection of reassuring reality:
"Why is there so much month left at the end of the money?"---John Barrymore
"October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February." ---Mark Twain
"I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish he didn't trust me so much."---Mother Teresa
"When one burns one's bridges, what a very nice fire it makes."---Dylan Thomas
"If you think you have it tough, read history books."---Bill Maher
And Voltaire: "Life is a shipwreck but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats."

| I loved this book. The quotes offered here range from the well known to the little known, and all seem to fit in the place they are put. However, the Petras siblings also won my heart over by including my favorite author (Flannery O'Connor) and my favorite singer (Harry Chapin) amongst the luminaries that they quote here. While this does color my judgment some, it also makes me want to read more from them, since their taste in both quotes and source material runs in line with mine. | | | | It's A Varied Collection Jul 14, 2009 |
This is a collection of quotes from some famous and some not-so-famous people, some living and some dead for centuries. The quotes selected by the Petras brother and sister team cover a wide variety of thought. There is a mixture of humor, wisdom and inspiration, the inane, and some just plain weird. Of course, it is a book you don't necessarily read from cover to cover; just pick it up and browse wherever the book pops open. In this regard, if the reader was looking for a certain kind of quote, it would be more helpful if the quotes were arranged by some sense of theme.
Persons quoted are listed in a section at the back with dates for their lifetime and one or two sentences about them. I wish there had been an index which listed page numbers of the quotes for each person. Many persons were quoted more than once and it would be nice to find all quotes for a given person without having to page through the entire book. It would also have been interesting to see a date given for each quote because I occasionally wondered about the context of the times of the quote. In fairness, I am probably trying to make the book more meaningful than was intended.
The quotes are all pretty good and the book is nice and small so it would fit in a purse or backpack or on a desk if the reader wanted it handy for quick bit of humor or wisdom.
Some of my favorites were:
Page 101 - It's not the will to win that matters--everyone has that. It's the will to prepare to win that matters. --Bear Bryant, Football Coach
Page 121 - Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency. Nothing is that important. Just lie down. --Natalie Goldberg, Writer
Page 234 - All the mistakes I ever made were when I wanted to say "No" and said "Yes." --Moss Hart, Playwright
