Item Description...
Product Description For many years, a Christmas tradition in my family was to get comfortable in front of the TV set during the Christmas Season, and watch the various screen adaptations of Charles Dickens' wonderful literary masterpiece, "A Christmas Carol," a timeless story I came to love and cherish. One result of my love for "A Christmas Carol" was that in 1979 I decided I wanted to pay tribute to the story by writing my own version. At that time, I was a big fan of gymnastics, and thought it would be a novel approach to write a gymnastics-themed version. Towards the end of the year, I wrote my story, which was published as "A Gymnastic Christmas Carol" in the November/December 1979 issue of "Gymnastics World" magazine, published by SundbySports Publications. Thirty years later, realizing that my Christmases Yet To Come are far fewer in number than my Christmases Past, I decided that this would be an appropriate time to resurrect my story, revise it a bit, and present it in the more enduring form of a book. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy reading this little story, my tribute to Charles Dickens' timeless masterpiece and to Christmas, as much as I did writing it both in 1979 and 2009.

 | If Scrooge Had Been A Gymnastics Coach... Dec 4, 2009 |
Having long been a fan of Charles Dickens' timeless story "A Christmas Carol," I consider Rick Helley's adaptation, "A Gymnastics Christmas Carol," to be a welcome, delightful, and novel addition to the canon of "Christmas Carol" adaptations. Mr. Helley's protagonist, Eliezer Scagg, is every bit the bitter old curmudgeon that Scrooge is, a kindred soul of old Ebenezer to be sure; but Scagg is not a miser like Scrooge, but a women's gymnastics coach. As a result, while Mr. Helley's story is faithful to the overall plot and theme of Dickens' original, the premise of a Scrooge-like gymnastics coach gives Mr. Helley's story some interesting and compelling variations and twists that I won't give away here.
Included in the book are several delightful illustrations specific to the story. Also included are a number of vintage antique Christmas images, which give the book a decided Christmas feel. The book is set in a cursive typeface, and is printed on creme paper, giving the book's interior an appearance reminiscent of an antique handwritten manuscript that could have been penned in the 1840s by Charles Dickens himself. These are nice touches that enhance the presentation and impact of the story.
A big plus is the book's $9.95 price which, given the quality of both the book's story and appearance, makes the book a bargain. It would make an ideal stocking stuffer.
In closing, I give "A Gymnastics Christmas Carol" my highest recommendation, and commend it to any fan of "A Christmas Carol" as well as to anyone else seeking a nice Christmas book at a bargain price. Thank you, Mr. Helley, for your worthy adaptation of Mr. Dickens' timeless Christmas classic.
