Reviews - What do our customers think?
Because I can't give it zero stars  Jun 15, 2009
Richard Laymon's Bite is an ugly book that revels in its shock value. Although it is never revoltingly graphic, it dwells so much on violence and rape that it disgusted me. I think that Laymon wants to be regarded alongside Stephen King and Dean Koontz--two other horror writers who know the value of shock--but they build character and suspense while shocking the reader. Bite offers nothing beyond shock.

Bite is about Sam, whose life is turned upside down when his old girlfriend Cat shows up and pleads with him to kill a vampire who has been tormenting her. The majority of the novel focuses on what happens after the encounter with the vampire as it becomes a road/horror survival story. Here's the novel's blueprint: endless inane dialogue between Sam and Cat broken up by a scene or inference of violent rape flavored with random nudity from Cat. I suppose Laymon wants to say something about the fine line between violence and sex, and his idea of vampires as being anyone who preys on other people is worth considering, however he tells the story in such a plain, uncompelling way that any substance he had in mind is lost. Nothing about Bite is interesting, engaging, or original. Skip it, or better yet, burn any copies you come across so no one else is subjected to its awfulness.

Fantastic!.  Mar 20, 2009
Bite is yet another brilliant horror novel from the master, Richard Laymon. Very addictive and suspencefull with a generous portion of Laymon's usual sense of humour added in - this book had me laughing out loud quite a few times.

Also, I think that this one of his more suspencefull novels (of the fifteen or so that I have read) especially in the opening chapters. While Sam and Cat where waiting for the vampire to arrive I was pratically tearing through the pages to see what would happen and this is the only book that has made me do that. I was very impressed with the suspence and tension.

Although, I really loved this book, a warning to fans of vampire novels: the vampire is only a major part of this novel for the first 100 pages, the last three quaters or so revolve around Cat and Sam's encouter with a psychopathic drifter who they give a lift in their car (while trying to dispose of the vampire's body). Although the vampire is present all the way through the book, it is sort of pushed into the background until the very end.

The ending of the book which also very good with multiple plot twists during the last few chapters. I also liked the characters as they were well fleshed out and all had their own personalities.

Decent read but a little wordy  Jan 21, 2009
I have read this author's work in the past and I do like his books, but this one was a little wordy. Sometimes the people talking was confusing to the point that I had to put it down for a second. The words, he said or she said would have flowed so much better.
But then this might have been the editor who did this and not his true vision of the book.
The characters were likable and the story was enjoyable, not the best but not the worst. I would like to give it a 4 because I don't like being mean but its a good 3 here. Really a 3 1/2.
I'm still a fan and I like horror in general. I will be back more from this author.

Boo!  Nov 22, 2008
Boo to whoever wrote the synopsis on the back of this book, and Boo to Richard Laymon for what this book turned into. This book is sold as a vampire novel... it's not, in fact the "vampire" has metal fangs and spends 90% of the book in the trunk of a car with a stake through him, looking very very dead. This book follows Cat and Sam through a series of bad luck and even worse choices. The choices they make are so dumb, that the reader will find themselves hoping that the vampire WOULD come back and do the two of them in before they have a chance to breed and create anyone else as dumb as the two of them.
Short Summary: Cat shows up out of nowhere on the front steps of her long forgotten ex-boyfriends house. She asks him (after not seeing him for 10 years) to slay a vampire for her... so without a single question he goes "Okay" and they slay the vampire. Then they pop the Vampire's body into the trunk and head off to who knows where to try to bury the body. But they get a flat, and meet up with a serial killer, and some hostages, and some other nastiness... but they laugh and have sex through all of it.
It seems like this should have been at least an okay book. But it wasn't... in reality this was a very boring book with little to no action, lots of whining and Cat yapping about the 57 or so times she has been raped, bitten by vampires, beaten by men, forced into abortions etc, and Sam just sort of nods at her and says something along the lines of "well that sucks" and she nods. These have to be two of the dumbest, and most boring characters ever put into a horror novel. And the sad thing is that if either of them had a lick of sense this book would have only been about 50 pages long... and better for it. The dialogue is terrible, the plot is full of more holes than a cheese grater, and the ending leaves the reader wondering - why did I just read that... I could have put it down and read something else... or picked my toes for 3 hours and had a better time.
Sorry, I can't even recommend this to Laymon fans. The gore isn't up to his standards... there is of course lots of sex and body descriptions... and I think it is a Laymon requirement to use the word "Rump" at least 30 times per book. I won't say that it's the worst book I've ever read... but it will be one that I quickly forget.

a great vampire novel   Aug 27, 2008
The tragedy of Richard Laymon's untimely death on Valentine's Day 2001 is felt stongly in the brilliance of this novel, one of only three vampire stories he penned in his time. Of the other two i have only read The Travelling Vampire Show which comes highly reccommended by all fans, and the Stake which is harder to find in standard retail book stores. It would be easy to dismiss Richard Laymon as mere pornography and violence if you have an aversion to the excessiveness exploited therein, but if you stick to it long enough you will ultimately come to realize that Richard Laymon was in fact a genius and worth investing in. Bite was probably one of the most satisfying reading experiences i have had since i first started reading Clive Barker. Richard Laymon manages to express a knowledge of vampire mythology without indulging in the pretentiousness that seemed unavoidable in Stephen King's Salems Lot. The simplicity is hypnotic and it would have been easy enough to finish the book in one sitting, but i confess i savored it for an entire week.
