Lights needed  Jan 25, 2010
This book has the scariest beginning I've ever read. Until I figured out what was going on, I was terrified to read this one in the dark. Very quick read.

A Thrill on every page  Jan 25, 2010
After reading SERIAL I couldn't download this book fast enough. Mr. Kilborn has written a pageturner, indeed. I couldn't put this book down and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. Bravo. Mr. Kilborn! I will be looking for more of your suspenseful thrillers. Watch out Stephen King, this author is going to give you a run for your money. I would recommend this book to those who love to be frightened!

Disappointing  Jan 17, 2010
I had high hopes for this book based on others reviews, but I was highly disappointed. Story was not believable and had a hard time keeping my interest for the entire book. The attempt at suspense failed to lure me in.

Danger On Every Page  Jan 9, 2010
4 AND 1/2 STARS

Jack Kilborn, aka JA Konrath, has created a fantastic book with "Afraid", blending numerous genres into a truly thrilling ride. Part horror, thriller, action, and a touch of science fiction, this book literally has someone in danger on every page. Kilborn/Konrath doesn't go the Hollywood route either, writing a very R-rated story that has characters dying and being brutalized in every way imaginable. Like author Richard Laymon, Kilborn/Konrath uses mini cliffhangers or hooks at the end of each chapter, forcing the reader to continue reading long into the night. It's very addictive, trust me. I really love this style and without question, plan on reading more of this author's work.

There might be a touch too many coincidences in the story for some readers, but the pace moved so fast that I let that go and just held on for the ride. The technical writing is very simple, but that aids in keeping the story moving as fast as it does. Besides a few typos, another problem I had were the constant run-ins between the villains and the townspeople. These five guys seemed to be everywhere at once and always at the right place at the right time. I also didn't think the chemical "Charge" would have the effect on regular humans that it did, specifically the way it did on one of the townspeople later in the story. It felt too convenient to occur that fast. But the good considerably outweighed the bad in this book and I recommend this to any fan of the horror or thriller genre.
