This is a story that needed to be told  May 12, 2008
I found this book at Walmart and I was unsure at first whether I wanted to read it, because I have read hadn't read a book like this since E. Lynn Harris' "Love of My Own", but I must say I thought it was a excellent story. It did required being open minded and non-judgemental, and I consider myself to be both. I loved Val and David and I could feel their love and commitment to one another. I didn't feel like Val was in denial, but David definitely was. His fears were common fears gay men face in the African American community, which was... will he be considered less of a man, because he was in love with a man. Patti reminds me of so many women I have been aquainted with in Dallas. She used her body instead of her brain. She was, in my opinion, an opportunist and a gold-digger. She slept with David initially for the fun of it. She would have went on with her life, without another thought of hooking up with him, had she not seen him on Oprah and started seeing dollar signs. She saw an opportunity for a better life and used her body to try and achieve it. She could see everybody around them was gay, but she was so materialistic she really didn't care whether it was David or Val, she hooked up with, as long as she got to live the good life. Never questioning theirr relationship, but on several occasion saying "Y'all act like a married couple" DUH...YOU THINK!! I was especially partial to Val, he just captured my heart, cause he was such sweet caring man. My heart went out to him when David continuously hurt him (unintentionally I believe). This book really addressed the problems a couples faces when trying to love one another, whether it be a homo-sexual or hetero- sexual relationship. There are always people out there who want to break up your happiness. I am so glad David and Val were able to survive and remain together, cause I really loved them as a couple and I think they were meant to be together forever. It really didn't matter to me that they were gay. I think this was a refresing look at a alternate lifestyle and Ms. Hawkins was responsible in writing it, because she did stress the importance of practicing safer sex. FOR THE WOMEN WHO DIDN'T LIKE THE DOWN LOW FACTOR...WAKE UP CAUSE THIS IS THE REALITY WE LIVE IN DAILY and we need to make more efforts to protect ourselves. Ultimately it is up to each individual to protect their own lives. Be responsible in your choices, use you brain first, cultivate a relationship before becoming physical and last but certainly not least RESPECT YOURSELF KNOWING YOU HAVE MORE TO OFFER THAN A BANGING BODY AND A GORGEOUS FACE.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Caught in a Masquerade   Jul 29, 2007
David and Val started out as roommates, but one thing led to another and before either of them realized it, they were in a sexual relationship. Over time, it becomes apparent that their relationship transcends the physical and they were meant for one another. David is an ex-policeman turned prize-winning author, and Val is a highly acclaimed dancer, but despite their relative fame, they lead a relatively quiet and private life together in their dream home. Problems arise when David goes off on a book tour and happens upon Patti, a former childhood sweetheart who is the only person, other than Val, David has ever been in love with. Patti has a meager life in comparison to David and she immediately makes it her mission to reclaim her position in his heart. When she decides to make an impromptu visit to David and Val, who she thinks is David's roommate, things get tricky as David tries to protect his secrets, deal with conflicting emotions and urges, and maintain his relationship with Val.

AIN'T NOTHIN DOWN ABOUT IT is a polarizing book. Once the initial surprise is revealed there will be some readers who will be immediately turned off and no longer want to continue while others will be hooked. In addition, readers should be prepared for the explicit sex scenes. My biggest issue with the story was that after a while, I found myself saying "Enough already," and I felt as if all the secrets simply drug on for too long, and the fact that the characters couldn't see the truth at times seemed unrealistic. Despite this, AIN'T NOTHIN DOWN ABOUT IT is an engrossing, and at times, shocking look at a romance complicated by secrecy and sexual identity issues.

A True Eye Opener!!!  May 14, 2007

PR Hawkins has written a novel different from the conventional love story in Ain't Nothing Down About It. In this novel, she delves into the relationship of David and Val, two men who love each other immensely but hide their love from society to shield them from ridicule in their successful careers.

David and Val meet as college roommates and both of them have previously lived as heterosexual men. It is not until they have a hot, steamy, encounter of sexual discovery in the shower that they realize that they have feelings for each other. Prior to this encounter, neither one of them had homosexual thoughts or experiences so these newfound feelings take both of them by surprise. At first, they ignore the encounter and continue on in their respective lives - David as a successful novelist and Val as a well-known dancer. Eventually, they come to terms with the revelation and decide to forge a relationship that lasts for years, yet they decide to keep it a secret to the outside world. It is not until the reemergence of Patti, David's super sexy ex, that his and Val's relationship is put to the test and they are faced with a major decision about their liaison.

Even though the subject matter covered in this novel was a departure from my usual reading, I found it to be very well-written and enlightening. I thought it was quite interesting how Hawkins chose to write a story of homosexual lovers in which they did not embrace being gay even though they had been living as gay lovers for some years. I felt that the writing from this perspective gave the novel more depth. I definitely was not prepared for the explicit and erotic sex scenes but it was done in a way that was cohesive with the storyline. Fans of E. Lynn Harris and James Earl Hardy will definitely not want to miss this read!

You can say that again  Sep 26, 2006
This book was disgusting and distasteful but intriguing nonetheless. Only an experienced lover of this type could write the homosexual love scenes contained in this book that was not only explicit, but enlightening. Prior to reading this book, I wasn't privy at all to how men got down with each other.

It was evident that David and Val loved one another, but I was personally not an admirer of either of them. I was really hoping that their little world would come crashing down around them by the end of the book. Both men were public figures that insisted keeping their relationship a secret in order to preserve their celebrity status while fooling their many admirers and fans. Patti was foolish beyond belief to actually be living with these men and not see through their facade. Despite David's literary talent, he was ignorant as they come to fail to at informing Patti of the danger she was in each time they had a "personal" encounter. While the author quietly promoted using protection once or twice throughout the book, not enough emphasis was put on it. On far too many occasions, David and Val stole an opportunity to go right at it with no mention of condom usage. They played Russian roulette with the lives of other people. "There was nothing down about that". Maybe they finally came to terms with their homosexuality...but in today's day of the AIDS virus, whether you're a man having intimate relations with one man or one million men, there's a moral obligation and definite social responsibility to inform people you're in constant close contact with. That is where this book missed the boat.
