Item Description...
Product Description If you've ever found yourself looking at a photograph in a museum or gallery and thinking, "I can do that," this is the book for you. 101 QUICK AND EASY IDEAS TAKEN FROM THE MASTER PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY shows you how to recognize and use the techniques of some of the great photographers of the last century. Each chapter of the book focuses on one photographer, and includes a brief biography that highlights what life experiences influenced his or her work, as well as descriptions of one or several iconic images they photographed that include the key photographic elements that apply to that work -- light, shadow, narrative, and symbolism. Along with the descriptions are recreations of the images that use similar subject matter and settings, as well as the steps to help you compose and manipulate your own version of the image. As you work through the book you'll find that the same concepts and themes were used by many of the photographers, but the meanings change as their work is shaped as the events, technology, and environment changed throughout the twentieth century. Arranged alphabetically, 101 QUICK AND EASY IDEAS TAKEN FROM THE MASTER PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, features photographers you'll easily recognize and some that are new to you, such as Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lang, Robert Mapplethorpe, Berenice Abbott, Heri Cartier-Bresson, and many more. By learning about and trying the common photography concepts and techniques used by famous photographers you'll enhance your photographic skill set and hopefully find inspiration and ideas for your own work.

 | Learn from the masters; composition, tone and use of shadow Dec 24, 2009 |
I studied photography in high school, and it's still an abiding interest for our entire family. I spent a lot of time in at "MOMA" in New York as a kid, examining the wonderful prints by master photographers. This book features such masters as Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alfred Steiglitz, Berenice Abbott and more. Their unique methods, such as composition, subject, use of shadow, tonality are featured in a way to have you focus on one element of a photograph from one of these masters and find a way to implement it into your own work. For example, Abbott had strong compositional elements from architecture (one of my favorite subjects) while Ansel Adams used exaggerated tonality in his black and white photos to make startling impressions of the natural world.
I was a bit surprised NOT to find Diane Arbus included (it may have been a copyright issue, perhaps permission from her estate was not given) but her work and how she found the absurd and the grotesque in the mundane was something I think could benefit any photographer of people. Since she is not included in this volume, I'd suggest you add a book of her work and study it in the same way this book recommends; look for the characteristic elements of the work and incorporate them into your own to see if it assists you in expressing your own vision. I think this is a valuable text for anyone who is getting serious about photography, and if you are teaching a community class, this would be a very helpful reference for students. | | | Write your own review about 101 Quick and Easy Ideas Taken from the Master Photographers of the Twentieth Century
