Product Description "All it would take was my true name being mentioned after dark, and it would float back to my aunt. She was the Queen of Air and Darkness, and that meant that anything said in the dark was hers to hear, eventually. The fact that spotting the missing Elven American Princess had become more popular than spotting Elvis helped. Her magic was always chasing blind leads. Princess Meredith skiing in Utah. Princess Meredith dancing in Paris. Princess Meredith gambling in Vegas. After three years I was still a front-page story for the tabloids, though the latest headlines had been speculating that I was as dead as the King of Rock and Roll . . ."
In fact, Meredith has been posing as a human in Los Angeles, living as a private investigator specializing in supernatural crime. But now Doyle, the Queen's chief bodyguard and assassin, has been dispatched to fetch her back - whether she likes it or not. And suddenly Meredith finds herself a pawn in her dreaded aunt's plans . . . plans that affect the future of the entire UnSeelie Court. The requirements of the job: to enjoy the constant company of the most beautiful - and immortal - men in the world. The reward: the crown - and the opportunity to continue to live. The penalty: death.
Outline Review Laurell K. Hamilton revitalized vampires, werewolves, and zombies in the popular Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books. In this new series, she updates faeries. A Kiss of Shadows introduces Merry Gentry, a.k.a. Meredith NicEssus, a faerie princess of the Unseelie Court, where politics is a blood sport. Merry, who's part sidhe (elvish), part brownie, and part human, never really fit in. She's short, not skilled in offensive magic, and mortal because of her human blood. These are real liabilities when your family, especially aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, is out to kill you. Merry has been in hiding for three years, living in Los Angeles and working for the Grey Detective Agency, which specializes in "supernatural problems, magical solutions." A new case sets her against a man who uses forbidden magic to seduce fey women and drain their power. A plan to trap him goes awry and Merry's cover is blown. Now Andais knows where she is. But things have changed in Andais's court, and Merry is changing too. Despite the selkies, brownies, goblins, and ogres in this book, it's not for children. The fey are "creatures of the senses"--and in the Unseelie court, sex and pain go together. Merry is sexually adventurous and surrounded by gorgeous, powerful males, most of whom want her badly. She's politically savvy and no coward, though she's not the warrior Anita is. Hamilton fans and readers of adult fairy tales like Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy will want to give Merry a look. --Nona Vero

 | Took a while to get into, but good read overall... Jan 26, 2010 |
| I downloaded this one as a Kindle freebie awhile back and just got around to reading it. I tried once before, but couldn't seem to get into it. The beginning chapters seemed a little slow to me, so I assumed the rest would be, too. I'm glad I gave it another chance because it ended up being a pretty good read. I like the world the author created, and the plot was interesting and fast-paced, for the most part. I did see a lot of similarities to the Anita Blake series, but enough differences to make worthwhile to me. (The author does certainly seem to have more than a passing interest in long hair for men, though.) Overall, it was a good read, and I'm planning on reading the next in the series to see where it leads. | | | | It's not for everyone, but it sure was for me! Jan 6, 2010 |
I can understand that people might think some of the parts of the story were perverse or disgusting, but I read this book as if I was reading about a completely alien culture (which I was) and the weirdness of it all made it feel more real to me. I think that if this immortal race had the same attitudes as us about sex, it would not only be boring, but surprising that they were so much like us after thousands of years.
I thought the story was fun and a great fantasy for any woman who wouldn't mind a harem of beautiful men. :) The author could definitely cut back on the descriptions and the phrase "the pain was sharp and immediate" was used like 4 times, but it was a fun tale to get lost in. It was certainly nice to read something that really felt new for a change. | | | | GOOD START TO THE SERIES Jan 3, 2010 |
| Ok, I enjoyed the book. I am a new reader of Hamilton, well I read on Anita Hill book long ago, and decided on faeries over vampires, so I picked up A KISS OF SHADOWS. First off the warning: adult book here! One more thing, this is a book that is common in series, it sets up the series so lots of back ground and the reader must work to get a handle on the creatures, faeries, sidhe, brownies, goblins, orges and oh yes, humans. The cover says Meredith Gentry. P.I. Well, forget that in this book, I guess later books. Meredith Gentry is Meredith NicEssus of the Unseelie Court of sidhe, hiding for years, but now called home, dangerous as it is. Sex is a giant topic in this book, be aware. As I said, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one. Recommended. | | | | Zero star rating, where are you when I need you? Dec 31, 2009 |
| I checked out the audio version of A Kiss of Shadows from the library. I only made it through Chap 6 before I gave up. The lack of plot, repetitive (read: on and on and on and on...) descriptions of body parts, clothing, hair, etc. were agonizing. And, what was worse is that with an audio book it is pretty much impossible to skip to the next actual development in the plot (such as it is, and as of the end of Chap 6, it isn't much). Because I enjoyed the Anita Blake series, I really wanted to like this series, too. I thought of trying again with a hardcopy version of the book, but then I checked out the other reviews. Uh-oh, looks like reading this un-edited drivel is just as bad as listening to it. I'd give this book zero stars if there were such a rating. | | | | Author needs a thesaurus among other things... I am never going to read another book by this author. I keep nearly flinging my Kindle across the room--fortunately I remember that it's not a paperback and refrain in time. If I hear the words "spill" "spilled" or "spilling" again anytime in the next few years I may vomit from the overexposure. Can she really think of no other word to describe someone's hair, clothing, etc??
The plot is worthless, where you can even find one. The character development is nonexistent. The entire book is just a framework upon which to hang long, tedious descriptions of characters' skin, eyes, and clothing or to describe the endless sexual escapades of the characters. The sex scenes are so boring that by midway through the book I started just skimming through to find the end of the scene so I could get on with finishing the story of the book and finally be done with the stupid thing. As an example: she spent 6 pages [Kindle pages, may be different in print] describing the main character being helped out of a pair of thigh-high stockings. I was about to tear my hair out from the boredom.
I would not only avoid this book, but will avoid anything else by this author and suggest that others do the same. What a turd. | | | Write your own review about A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry, Book 1)
