 | From Judith at J. Kaye's Book Blog Jul 1, 2009 |
Wonder if deep within the vault of the Vatican there were the original texts of the Bible, handwritten by the actual authors. Wonder if the Vatican had kept these truths hidden, along with the original Book of Revelations that tells in detail of the rise of the Antichrist. Now suppose a copy of that leaked out over a hundred years ago to a zealous group who was determined to make the prophecy come true sooner than what was predicted...
John Manning has taken all of these what ifs and composed one of the best thrillers of 2009. ALL THE PRETTY DEAD GIRLS is a mix of ROSEMARY'S BABY meets ANGELS & DEMONS. To say this book is your typical thriller would be a serious understatement. It's definitely not your fluffy weekend read.
| | | | Where do I even begin? Jun 30, 2009 |
This book was horrible for too many reasons for me to discuss in a review so I'll just hit the highlights.
1) The blurb on the back cover was completely misleading. I wouldn't have bought this had I known what it was. Isn't that sort of like false advertising? I feel like my $4.97 + tax was stolen from me.
2) Only liberals (or conservatives with VERY thick skin) will like this book.
I'm a conservative and I found the whole book to be extremely insulting. The author obviously hates people who have conservative viewpoints. It's also obvious that the author doesn't actually KNOW any conservatives and most likely relies on MSNBC to provide him with his insulting stereotypes. (He actually put a dig about Fox News in his book so I figure my jab at MSNBC is fair play). This book was so full of sweeping generalizations that it actually shocked me. (But I guess since he's a liberal I'm not allowed to call it "hate speech" right? That doesn't work for "my kind" does it?)
Apparently, all conservatives are hyper-religious, closed-minded bigots who don't read books that aren't fiction and are generally ignorant, classless, and uncultured. (My summary of Chapter 8). Liberals on the other hand, "subscribe to The New York Times, watch movies with subtitles, and their living rooms are filled with books most of their neighbors have never heard of--by authors like Proust and Sartre and Faulkner...." (pgs. 68-69). Really?!?! I'm staring at my bookshelf right now and I see Sartre, Jung, Dickinson, Hemingway, Friedan (Yes! a FEMINIST!!), etc. I wonder how those got there?!?! You know what else I see on my bookshelf? All my law school text books. Am I still uneducated and ignorant even though I have a BBA in Finance and a JD from a top 100 law school? Granted, it's not an Ivy League degree, but it's still a higher education from a very reputable school. Guess what!? I'm not a religious fanatic with a gun and I don't hate minorities either. (Has your head exploded yet Mr. Manning?)
This author would benefit from getting out and actually doing some character research. I mean, if you're going to blame an entire group of people for ushering in the anti-christ (I wish I was kidding), shouldn't you at least find out if the entire group really is entirely made up of "extreme right wing" people? I mean, sure, every political group has its extremes, but this author seems to think that the entire Right is made up of crazy, evil, closed-minded people. Yes, I understand that this book is fiction and that he doesn't REALLY think conservatives have raised the anti-christ; however, I'm still deeply insulted. I just think it's irresponsible to write about people based purely on stereotypes. He carelessly offends about 50% of the American population with this book, and he comes off as very arrogant and ignorant. Frankly, I'm embarassed for him. I'm embarassed for his publisher too. If the book was filled with insulting stereotypes about any other group of people in this country would it have gotten to the bookstores? I doubt it.
Anyway, I underlined all the passages in this book that insulted me and by the time I was done my pen had almost run dry. I could provide countless examples but it's just not worth it. This book is going in the garbage where it belongs.

| All the Pretty Dead Girls is more of a horror story and I do not like horror stories. I was in a situation that I had alot of free time so, of course, I took that book as my new serial killer book. Imagine the shock when I realized I had a different kind of book. If I had not been trapped with only one book I would have thrown it away. I had the choice of reading it or counting tiles on the floor. Relucently I started it. After the second chapter I was hooked. I have just finished it, enjoyed it, and am looking for another by him. What a surprise and I have learned a lesson. | | | | Tired of horror/sci--fi hiding behind the mystery genre Jun 6, 2009 |
| The back cover description of this book doesn't give an inclination of what this book is really about. I was looking for a mystery/suspense and got some crazy "anti-Christ", weird, sci-fi garbage. It seems as if more and more writers are hiding behind the mystery genre to get people to buy their books. If I wanted horror/sci-fi I would have bought it. This book was in the "mystery" section and I feel like I got ripped off. Wish I would have read some of the reviews here first..hope I help someone else from making the same mistake I did. :) | | | | Not your typical thriller -- have fun with this one! May 24, 2009 |
| This book was NOT at all what I expected. I was thinking it would be a run-of-the-mill thriller - the type with a plot that I can write in my sleep. I assumed it would feature the usual: torture, rape, and a sicko psycho predator stalking coeds because of some hideous compulsion that would be detailed in the novel. Be warned - there is murder, but the story itself is not about a psychopath attacking and murdering young girls at this private college in the Northeast - it's about the Book of Revelations and the Antichrist and satanic worship. So if you're looking for a typical suspense thriller, this book isn't what you're wanting. If, however, you want a fast paced story with a heroine you're not sure you like - this is your book. You'll find a fast paced read that might keep you up far too late at night. Enjoy! | | | Write your own review about All The Pretty Dead Girls
