Item Description... The killing of Dominican Pierre Claverie, the bishop of Oran, and his young Muslim assistant, on August 1, 1996, was both a symbol and the epitome of the mayhem that had gripped Algeria for several years. For Claverie, it was the culmination of a remarkable and courageous journey of faith. Nothing in his origins as a French pied-noir, born in Algeria in 1938, would have indicated his eventual emergence as a leading figure in his country's search for a peaceful future. In laying down his life for the cause of reconciliation and peace among religions, he belongs in the company of Archbishop Romero, Martin Luther King, and other great witnesses of our time. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Witnessing a dialog of religions and cultures Dec 7, 2007 |
| I am about 3/4 way throught this book. I have found it to be an encouragement to patiently dialog with "the other." "The other" are those people, religions, cultures, which we have grown up unfamiliar with. The resulting ignorance leads to prejudice which in turn can lead to violence, etc. The central figure of this book, Bishop Pierre Claverie, a Dominican friar who was made a bishop in the 1980s in Algeria, exemplifies this dialog. His willingness to honestly encounter "the other" - in this case, the Islamic people - was a willingness unto death! | | | Write your own review about A Life Poured Out: Pierre Claverie of Algeria
