Product Description
Each chapter describes important medical discoveries, from the introduction of the first antibiotic to the present, where serendipity, intuition, coincidence, or laboratory accident played an important role in bringing it to light. Although chance is the principal determinant, the book emphasizes other factors, such as economic and political exigencies and being in the right place at the right time. Pure luck is not thematic; rather Pasteur's dictum, "chance favors the prepared mind," underlies all critical events.

A Must Read if You Want to Stay Healthy!  Mar 28, 2006
After I read Cures Out of Chaos by Dr. Podolsky, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the book. I must also admit that I am the type of person who finds reading a book very difficult and am quick to put something down because of my lack of interest. However, I didn't run into any attention or lack of interest problems when reading Cures Out of Chaos.
Dr. Podolsky detailed several medical breakthroughs that many researchers, scientists and doctors dedicated their lives to finding an answer. Most medical discoveries did occur by chance and luck. For example, only as Dr. Fleming went on vacation, his culture plates became contaminated with mold which destroyed the colonies of bacteria. This event would have never occurred under normal laboratory research conditions since the culture plates would have be thrown out before slow-growing mold could begin to grow. However, Dr. Podolsky also wanted to point out that these medical discoveries do not always develop from explosive, intuitive, or lucky discoveries in the laboratory. These innovations came from painstaking, diligent, collection of knowledge that may be already available for use, but is so scattered that each fragment of information makes little sense individually. For example, the work of Maude Abbott, M.D. spent most of her life studying and collecting specimens of congenital heart disease. Only after this collection, many disorders or variances then became recognizable and identified. I would also like to add that my favorite story that Dr. Podolsky retold was titled "Elegy for the planet." Guess, you other readers will have to read Cures Out of Chaos to understand why I liked this story the best!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book since it detailed several medical breakthroughs. If these discoveries weren't found, then we as people would probably still be suffering from disease, viruses and common colds. I would suggest anyone who is interested in learning about medicine, creativity and innovation or just looking for a good book to snuggle up with to read Cures Out of Chaos. After all, we can at least contribute some time learning about these wonderful medical breakthroughs and the people who were so dedicatedly involved since these brilliant people took most of their time out of their lives to find these cures!

An almost-novel about great medical discoveries  Jun 22, 1999
Do you know the difference between Salk & Sabin vaccines? Do you know who "invented" penicillin or do you just think you know? Meet the dedicated researchers who spend their lives struggling to identify causes for mankind's major medical problems; often leading to their cure. Polio, blood typing, organ transplantation, nerve regeneration, etc., they're all here. A fascinating story, almost a novel, about these and other great medical discoveries & how they often came about accidentally. Dr. Podolsky has presented an immensely detailed, exhaustively researched, beautifully written "can't put down" volume. [I put down a John LeCarre to read this book. Dr. Podolsky is a better writer, and "Cures Out of Chaos" has a better plot (several in fact.)]

Complete bibliography, very detailed index.
