Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good concept but drags a little  Dec 9, 2009
Reviewed by Cayden Aures (age 5) and Mom for Reader Views (12/09)

"The Berenstain Bears: Say Their Prayers" begins at bedtime as Brother and Sister are kneeling down by their bunk bed and saying their prayers. Brother wonders as to why prayers are said and why some people don't say any at all. Mama tries to answer but Brother still has questions. At the baseball game the next day Brother notices his cousin Fred praying on the pitcher's mound and this causes him to inquire into the topic even further. He learns that praying isn't just for bedtime.

Cayden: "I like The Berenstain Bears. I liked that Brother and Sister had bunk beds and I hope that we get bunk beds sometime too! My favorite part of the book was when they were at the baseball game and they had pictures of sharks on their shirts. I liked the pictures in the book but some parts of the book I didn't like because they were a little boring."

Parent's comments:

My son really enjoys The Berenstain Bears so I thought for sure that he would love "The Berenstain Bears: Say Their Prayers." For the most part he liked it, but I agree with him that it really seemed to drag in some places. It just seemed like it was too wordy and the story would have held mine and my child's interest more with a lower word count. However, I do like that The Berenstain Bears books teach great lessons and "The Berenstain Bears: Say Their Prayers" was no exception. My son also enjoyed the familiar characters and the illustrations.

Pretty cute book!  Aug 8, 2009
The whole story revolves around Brother Bear not understanding why they say their prayers at bedtime. He sees his cousin praying right before he starts to pitch in the big baseball game so he asks him why. It doesn't really get into why you pray or how as much as it does talk about the "God bless mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, etc. It would have been more interesting for kids if Michael had discussed that more in depth and answered Brother's question. Other than that, it's a great bedtime story. REcommend!

a bit long and off topic  Aug 7, 2009
It would probably be nice for an older child, but it was very long and off topic for my 4 year old. There is a long section about the soccer game that doesn't have a whole lot of bearing on saying prayers. Overall I think there is more about playing soccer than saying prayers. With an older child you may be able to discuss and bring it back though.

Inspired my son!  Jun 2, 2009
My son and I have an established bed time ritual and that includes a bath, a book or two and a prayer.

Before reading this lovely book, my 3 year old son would say the standard, "Now I lay me down to sleep...." prayer. But seeing the Berenstain Bears prayer for specific things, it opened his mind to include EVERYTHING.:)

A good book to teach an important lesson!

Long & Drawn Out  Jan 22, 2009
Right in the middle of reading this book to my daughter (5) she asked what the book was about. The moral of the story was too brief and hard to understand. My daughter thought the book was about baseball. I like their older books which are more fun, less mundane and more to the point.
