Item Description...

All hell's about to break loose. Literally. Bay City Paranormal Investigations Book 5. After more than a year as a couple-and plenty of bumps along the road-Sam Raintree and Dr. Bo Broussard are finally settling into life together. Bo has come to terms with his sexuality, their business is thriving, and Sam has begun to accept his role as a step-parent of sorts to Bo's sons, Sean and Adrian. The only real dark spot is Bo's ex-wife, Janine. When eleven-year-old Adrian begins exhibiting signs of psychokinesis-the same ability which allows Sam to manipulate interdimensional portals-the friction between Sam, Bo and Janine escalates. Sam and Bo have reason to believe Adrian's raw, uncontrolled talent poses a danger to him and those around him. Janine, however, believes Sam and Bo are encouraging dangerous delusions on Adrian's part. Common ground is nonexistent, anger and hard words ever-present. Caught in the middle of the conflict and burdened with an ability he can't yet control, Adrian is soon pushed beyond his limits. With Adrian's mind-and the lives of everyone around him-hanging in the balance, Sam and Bo race against time to save both boys and keep an otherworldly horror from breaking free. Warning: This book contains graphic language, explicit male/male sex, family drama and scary monsters.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
My favorite of the BCPI books so far  Oct 18, 2009
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- This story focuses on Bo and Sam's relationship with Bo's sons, and I really enjoyed seeing their interactions. The younger boy, Sean, is sweet and energetic and totally accepting of not only his father's homosexuality but also his father's new partner. A lot of what Sean says is very endearing. But it's the older boy, Adrien, who I found to be the most interesting character in the book. He's got the sullenness of a preteen dealing with his parents' divorce, but he's also innocent and fragile and yet at the same time, shockingly powerful.
- I said when I reviewed Volume 4, Closer, that I was getting a little tired of the whole interdimensional portal thing reappearing in EVERY book, but I take that back now, because there's a delightful new development on that front that makes the storyline more interesting.
- I've complained before about not being able to tell the secondary characters apart because they aren't fleshed out, but they're starting to become more memorable. Dean is no longer the only secondary character I care about, although he's still by far my favorite of the other investigators who work with Sam and Bo.

CONS:
- There are hints in the earlier books that Bo's marriage wasn't all that great and that his ex-wife isn't the most pleasant of women, but dadGUM. She is possibly the least likeable female character I've ever encountered in this genre, and a lot of m/m writers tend to vilify women a bit (even though a lot of them are women themselves). Seriously, though, the majority of scenes in which Bo's ex appears are INFURIATING. And it's not just that they're not fun to read; it's that I didn't really understand WHY she's so horrible.
- On the whole I didn't find Sam's and Bo's actions and attitudes as frustrating in this volume as I did in Volume 4, but there are still some frustrating individual scenes. Particularly with regard to Sam's interactions with Bo's ex-wife: in a few cases I wanted Bo to stand up for Sam more forcefully than he does.

Overall comments: I'm a goner by this point in the BCPI series, so I really can't give an objective opinion about whether you'd like this book without having read the earlier ones in the series. This volume has a better plot than some of the earlier ones, if only because the introduction of new characters adds an extra element of intrigue that is absent in the earlier books. Most of the books in the series have some romance, some sex, a decent plot, and a bit of creepiness, so overall they're a nice mix.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS, INTO THE LIGHT  Oct 14, 2009
An Inner Darkness (Bay City Paranormal Investigations) is book 5 in the Bay City Paranormal Investigations series. Sam and Bo have settled into a committed relationship. Bo has finally come completely out of the closet, Bo's sons, Sean and Adrian are adjusting to Sam and the BCPI business is doing well. Janine, however, is still filled with jealousy and bitterness for no apparent reason other than she enjoys playing the role of the scorned ex-wife and manipulating everyone. I was hopeful someone would slap her, but Sam and Bo are ever the gentlemen. Facing real terror proved to be a better incentive for Janine to change her bad attitude and accept reality about herself. Ally Blue has produced another exciting episode that holds you in suspense to the very end, with a liberal portion of emotional turmoil and sensual lovemaking. Oleander House is the first book of the series.
